Supreme/MF DOOM

British-American rapper MF DOOM (Daniel Dumile) was born in 1971 and raised in Long Island, New York. As a youth, he formed the graffiti crew, KMD, (A Positive Kause in a Much Damaged Society) with his younger brother, Dingilizwe. By the late 1980s, KMD had morphed into a rap trio of Zev Love X (Daniel), DJ Subroc (Dingilizwe) and Onyx the Birthstone Kid. The group’s 1991 debut Mr. Hood received critical praise. KMD was at work on their sophomore album, Black Bastards, when Dingilizwe was killed in 1993. Their label shelved the project, and Daniel disappeared from public life.

Years later, Daniel re-emerged at the Nuyorican Poets’ Cafe in Manhattan’s Lower East Side, where he performed unannounced with a stocking covering his face. The disguise became his signature look and the sheer stocking was replaced with a metal mask. In 1997, he released “Dead Bent,” his first single as MF DOOM – a nod to the Marvel comic book villain Doctor Victor von Doom, and the pronunciation of his family last name DOOM-E-LAY. His debut solo album, Operation: Doomsday, (Came to destroy rap) arrived in 1999.

Over the following decade, MF DOOM (and his shifting cadre of pseudonyms, including Viktor Vaughn and King Geedorah) released six full-length albums. His 2004 collaboration with Madlib, Madvillainy, was hailed as one of the most anticipated releases in underground hip-hop history, and endures as one of the genre’s cult touchstones. On Madvillainy, MF DOOM’s enigmatic lyricism is arguably at its most thrilling.

MF DOOM passed away on October 31, 2020. Taken together, his expansive body of work – both solo and collaborative – amounts to one of rap’s most virtuoso authors and mysterious figures. Today, MF DOOM is regarded for his immeasurable influence on generations of artists to come.

Supreme has worked with the MF DOOM estate on a collection for Fall 2023. The collection features a Hooded Sweatshirt, T-Shirt and Beanie.
